Helping to Protect Elderly Nazi Victims From Future Attacks
Elderly victims of Nazism living in Amigour sheltered housing will soon benefit from new protected areas designed to keep residents safe in case of attacks like those launched by Hezbollah last summer.
The Claims Conference is allocating, pending approval by the Board of Directors, $1.7 million to construct a protected area on every floor in 13 Amigour complexes and toward the installation of air-conditioning systems in existing protected areas in four additional complexes. In total, these 17 complexes have apartments housing 946 Nazi victims.
Amigour is a not-for-profit organization that administers 47 sheltered housing institutions for seniors throughout Israel, where most of the residents are victims of Nazi persecution. Many of the older complexes do not contain protected areas on residential floors for shelter in the event of an attack, an issue that became crucial during Israel’s war with Hezbollah in 2006
